My first wedding!
Ever since I started officially covering events in 2004, I have been asked well over 40 times by now to shoot a wedding. Each time that I turned down an inquiry, my urge to shoot a wedding just grew stronger and stronger but I knew that I still had a lot to learn.
Wedding photography is definitely not something you can just dive into. After all, it’s the one day in a couple’s life that they will want to remember forever, so you want to deliver the highest quality images possible. I wanted to make sure that I had enough practice in all aspects of photography to be able to confidently tackle any situation that would arise. Yes there were plenty of situations that did arise for this one - from my 5d mk II failing on me temporarily to wireless strobe triggers not working…even after thoroughly testing everything over a week and also days in advance.
I learned a lot - especially with the pace of how fast things actually go by. I didn’t have time to think about settings. I just dialed the numbers in and that came from years of tried and tested experience shooting birthdays, portraits, action and still life in all types of conditions. My close to 3 years experience in photojournalism for The Daily Targum definitely also came into play in terms of always being aware of what’s going on and being at the ready.
This shot was taken with a Canon 1d mk II and 15mm f/2.8 fisheye lens mounted on a 9 ft. Bogen extension tripod. It was remotely triggered at the same time I was shooting the bride and groom walking down the aisle. That’s me on the bottom right and my colleague Justin Mendoza of M3 Crew on the left. My secondary shooter for the day was Paulo Salud who you can see on the altar.
More shots to come soon.
